With social distancing, most of our time is spent at home. If you're looking for a great DIY project, here's how to create a 'Smart Deck'.
Step 1: Assess and improve your outdoor WiFi signal
Before adding smart home gadgets to your deck, ensure you have reliable outdoor WiFi coverage
Use the WiFi Signal Strength Meter app to test your WiFi signal strength
Poor WiFi? Upgrade to a new Mesh WiFi System
I recommend Orbi: Whole Home WiFi System
Tech Hack #1 - Install a WiFi Satellite outdoors to improve signal strength
Step 2: Add a ‘Smart Speaker’ for voice commands
Choose between Amazon Echo, Google Assistant and more. Currently, I'm using Google Home Max
Tech Hack #2 - Mount an old computer monitor or TV and play videos via voice
Add streaming stick for easy access to Netflix, YouTube and more
Install a Over-the-Air (OTA) Antenna
Step 3: Install LED Light strip
Inexpensive RGB LED light strips can add cool lighting to your outdoor space. Here's the one's I buy off Amazon:
LED Strip Lights, 32.8 feet - $48.99
Tech Hack #3 - Add a WiFi LED Controller to control light strips with your voice.
Turn lights on/off and change colours via voice
Step 4: Add Wireless, Motion Activated Lights
Battery powered cameras and lights can provide you with smartphone alerts for any motion detected on your deck
